The Web service joins the tightly coupled, highly productive aspects of n-tier computing with the loosely coupled, message-oriented concepts of the Web. A Web service exposes its features programmatically over the Internet using standard Internet protocols like Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Extensible Markup Language (XML). A developer can integrate a Web service into an application by calling Web application programming interfaces (APIs) residing on a remote system.

mhe.net revolutionized distributed applications with its SecureCreditServer.net Web service. SecureCreditServer.net debuted at Microsoft Fusion 2000 in July. Through this Web service, application developers can incorporate access to credit bureau data for real-time, credit-based business decisions.

As Credit Bureaus enhance their data offerings, the new scoring criteria are made available to SecureCreditServer.net subscribers without the need for application modifications. This greatly reduces the amount of administrative costs and provides a viable model for the future of web services.
